Mystics Struggling In Wubble, Sign Stella Johnson
The struggling Washington Mystics announced today that they had signed rookie guard Stella Johnson. The Mystics were granted an emergency hardship to make a roster spot for her after Aerial Powers suffered a hamstring injury August 7th against the New York Liberty.
Johnson was selected 29th overall in the 2020 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury and was eventually signed by the Chicago Sky. However after appearing in only four games for the Sky, she was waived.
The Mystics kicked off the 2020 WNBA season with three straight victories. Following that however have been five straight losses including one to previously winless Liberty.
From the start, the 2020 season shaped up to be a very different one from their championship season just a year before. Four key players from last year are no longer with the team, for a variety of reasons. Reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne is rehabbing her back injury, Natasha Cloud opted out to focus on social justice issues, LaToya Sanders opted out for medical reasons and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough was traded in the Tina Charles deal. And Powers’ injury only adds to their woes.
