Delle Donne, Toliver Lead Mystics Past Mercury in Record Setting 99-93 Victory
Elena Delle Donne took over the game with a season-high 33 points, Kristi Toliver put in 25 of her own as the Washington Mystics downed a tough Phoenix Mercury team 99-93 on Tuesday night at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
It was a record setting night as it marked the first time in WNBA history that five different players scored 25 points or more. Besides Delle Donne and Toliver, three Mercury players hit or exceeded the 25 point mark – Brittney Griner with 30, Leilani Mitchell with 28 and DeWanna Bonner with 25. Additionally, as part of her 28 point total, Mitchell went 8 for 12 from the three-point arc, tying the WNBA single game record for three pointers made.
The game looked like it was on the way to being a lopsided affair as at one point the Mystics led by 23. However the Mercury kept coming and as Mitchell buried yet another three, they closed the Mystics lead to two with 1:21 remaining. Not to be denied, Toliver buried a three of her own and the Mystics held on to the victory.
The victory lifts the Mystics to 13-6 on the season, just a half-game behind the league leading Connecticut Sun and Las Vegas Aces.
