NYCFC Shuts Out Sounders 3-1
Led by three second-half goals, NYCFC extended its MLS unbeaten streak to 12 matches as they defeated the visiting Seattle Sounders 3-0 Wednesday night in front of 18,000 fans at Yankee Stadium.
The win lifts NYCFC to 7-1-8 on the season, with the lone blemish coming in the against Toronto FC in late March. NYCFC’s 29 points puts them tied for 4th place in the Eastern Conference with Atlanta United, just six points behind conference leading Philadelphia.
Maxi Moralez opened the match’s scoring in the 58th minute as his shot deflected off of Sounder defender Jordy Delem and over keeper Stefan Frei. It was Moralez’ sixth goal of the season.
Jesus Medina made it 2-0 in the 77th minute as he tapped in a shot from Valetin Castellanos into the net. It was Medina’s first goal of the season. Ebenezer Ofori who came into the game as a sub in the 62nd minute, finished off the scoring in the 88th minute with a blast from 30 yards out.
The Sounders, who fell to 8-5-5 (29 points) with the loss, came into the game shorthanded as a number of their top players – forwards Raul Ruidiaz and Jordan Morris and midfielders Cristian Roldan and Nicolas Lodeiro were out due to international play.
