Jones, Williams Lead Sun to 83-75 Victory Over Mystics
Led by a combined 47 points from Jonquel Jones and Courtney Williams, the Connecticut Sun beat the visiting Washington Mystics 83-75 on Tuesday night in front of over 5,200 fans at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
It was a close battle throughout for the WNBA’s two top teams and the Mystics entered the half with a 4 point lead. The Mystics extended the lead to 10 points early in the third quarter but the Sun came storming back and by the end of the quarter not only had erased the deficit but had built a nine point lead. Jones was a force in the third quarter, at one point scoring nine straight points for the Sun,
The victory was the fourth straight for the Sun and brought their overall record to 6-1 on the season. It was also Connecticut’s 11th straight home victory, dating back to last season.
For the Mystics, the loss breaks their four-game winning streak and drops them to 4-2 on the season. They remain in second place, 1 1/2 games behind the league leading Sun.,
Ariel Atkins led the way for the Mystics with 18 points followed by Aerial Powers with 14, Elena Delle Donne with 13 and Natasha Cloud with 12.
The difference maker in the game was the team’s success behind the 3-point line. Connecticut went 10 for 21 (47.6%) from the arc while Washington went only 6 for 28 (21.4%) from 3-point territory.
