NWSL: Spirit Take Over First Place with 2-0 Win Over Utah
Led by goals by Ashley Hatch and rookie Dorian Bailey, the Washington Spirit scored a 2-0 victory on Saturday night over the visiting Utah Royals FC in front of over 4,500 fans at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Hatch’s goal in the 23rd minute staked the Spirit to a lead they would never relinquish. It was the third straight game that Hatch has scored a goal. Bailey’s goal, the first of her NWSL career, came in the 70th minute after she was able to put in a rebound of a Hatch shot that hit the post.
Keeper Aubrey Bledsoe was outstanding once again, saving six en route to her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Coming into the game, Utah had only given up three goals all season. The Spirit now own the league’s best defensive record with just four goals allowed.
The victory lifts the Spirit to 5-1-1 and 16 points on the season, three points clear of second place Utah.
