Ogwumike Sisters Lead LA Sparks to Victory in Home Opener

The Ogwumike sisters combined for 39 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Sparks in their home opener over the Connecticut Sun 77-70 Friday night in front of over 12,000 fans at Staples Center.

Chiney Ogwumike, who was acquired by the Sparks from Connecticut in April, scored 20 points and pulled down 7 rebounds while Nneka Ogwumike had 19 points and 15 rebounds to help Derek Fisher get his first WNBA win.

The Sparks went on a 13-4 run at the end of the first half to give them a 38-31 halftime lead and Connecticut never held the lead again the rest of the way.

Jonquel Jones was outstanding for the Sun with 16 points and a career-high 22 rebounds in the losing effort. Additionally for the Sun, Courtney Williams and Jasmine Thomas each contributed 14 points.

The victory evens the Sparks’ record to 1-1 while the loss drops Connecticut to 2-1 on the season.
