Carson’s 20 Points Lead Mercury Over Aces 86-84

The Phoenix Mercury rallied from 12 points down to beat the visiting Las Vegas Aces 86-84 in front of over 14,000 fans in their home opener at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Without all-time WNBA scoring leader Diana Taurasi in the lineup due to injury, the Mercury are depending on a core group of players to carry the scoring load and it showed in this game as all five starters scored in double figures. Forward Essence Carson, who signed as a free agent in the off season, led all scorers with 20 points, while Brittney Griner and Yvonne Turner each contributed 18 for Phoenix. Brian January was a perfect 5 for 5 from 3-point range, finishing with 16 points. DeWanna Bonner was a force on the boards for the Mercury pulling down 12 rebounds while also contributing 12 points.

The Aces furiously tried to tie the game in the final seconds as reigning Rookie of the Year A’ja Wilson missed two shots in the game’s final moments.

Kayla McBride led the Aces with 15 points, followed by Liz Cambridge’s 13 points off the bench. Wilson contributed 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

The victory lifts Phoenix to 1-1 on the season, while Las Vegas drops to 1-1.
