Washington Mystics at Connecticut Sun Season Opener Preview
The Washington Mystics kick off their season on Saturday night as they visit Connecticut to take on the Sun at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville.
What to expect?
Well the Mystics were last seen in the 2018 WNBA finals, and are opening the 2019 campaign in a very strong position as they put a very strong squad on the floor. Led by Elena Delle Donne and Krist Toliver, the team has all five starters returning, plus they add 6-foot-4 forward Emma Meesseman back into the mix after a year away from the team. The team hopes to open the season strong as the schedule has them playing seven of their first 11 games on the road.
The Connecticut Sun are coming off two strong seasons, finishing 21-13 in both 2017 and 2018, but both seasons also ended in great disappointment as the team lost in the second round each time. The Sun are a very young team, but they’re deep and experienced and that should bode well for 2019. They’re led by a strong core consisting of power forward Alyssa Thomas, and a backcourt of Jasmine Thomas, Layshia Clarendon and Courtney Williams. The team also features Sixth Woman of the Year Jonquel Jones, rookie Kristine Anigwe and veteran Shekinna Stricklen.
Saturday’s matchup is a tough one out of the gate for both squads.
