NWSL: Spirit Down Thorns FC 3-1 To Take Top Spot

The Washington Spirit played a strong game throughout and beat the previously undefeated Portland Thorns FC 3-1 at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday Night. The victory puts the Spirit at 3-1-1 with 10 points, good enough to take over first place in the NWSL standings.

Ashley Hatch’s first goal of the season in the 16th minute staked the Spirit to a 1-0 lead – a lead they would never relinquish. In the 47th minute a Jordan DiBiasi corner kick deflected off Thorns midfielder Dagny Brinjarsdottir for an own-goal and gave the Spirit a 2-0 lead. To round out the scoring, DiBiasi scored an Olimpico as her kick from the corner bent in over the outstretched hands of Thorns keeper Britt Eckerstrom.

The impressive goal earned DiBiasi the fan-voted NWSL Goal of the Week honor for matchweek 6. It is her first NWSL award nomination and first NWSL award win.
