MLS: D.C. United Move Atop Eastern Conference with Scoreless Draw against Toronto
Keeping a number of its stars out of the starting lineup because of a packed week of matches, visiting D.C. United was able to lay low and come away with a scoreless draw against Toronto FC on Wednesday night. The draw moves the United to 7-3-3 and 24 points on the season, good enough to put them atop the Eastern Conference standings, one point ahead of Philadelphia.
United was striving to give some rest to its top players as Wayne Rooney, Paul Arriola, and Luciano Acosta didn’t enter the game until the second half. Lucas Rodriguez did not enter at all.
With United’s big stars on the bench, Toronto controlled play throughout much of the first half, tallying a season high 35 shots, with 13 of them hitting the target. The draw moves Toronto to 5-4-2 overall but 0-2-1 in its last three.
